| Is anyone using the Kohler sv600 single cylinder 20hp engine on their racing mower? If so how is it working for you? Or is anyone using the cv20 twin cylinder 20hp kohler? |

No one is using the single but they have two I know of using the twin. Do pretty well with them. I do not know what they have done to them. The most common motors used is the tecumseh twins and the Briggs vangaurds and intek twins. _________________ George Herrin BP#6

The reason I ask is because I have been running the 20hp twin in the MWLMRA for about 4 years now and really have a lot of luck with it as a stock motor. I was beating the Briggs twins that were built and modified without to much trouble (no Tecumsehs). I was wondering if there is any small modifications I could make to gain any more power. Competition is getting fierce. The rules allow any mods to the motor as long as it is a lawnmower engine between 5hp to 20hp. Alot of guys are going with horiz. engines.
In a different class I switched motors between a Tecumseh 17hp to this Kohler single 20hp. Right off the bat without making any changes other than the motor (same gears) I noticed that the Kohler does not have any low end. I geared down as far as I can and still not very powerful. I am certain that this motor has power if I can just figure it out. The rules require it to stay stock other than the carb and exhaust can be modified/changed.

Sorry I havn't got back to you sooner. The fact it must stay stock except motor and carb, you are very limited to what you can do!!! Describe your exhaust to me. You may can get some more bottom end there. The best bottom end Stock motor (v-twin I think) is the Tecumseh motor. It has dual carbs also. Can you lighten the flywheel? The kohler has hydraulic lifters (basically small block chevy) so playing with valve lash is out. You could pick up a bit there with mechanical lifters by runner a bigger lash. But Can't with the kohler. Some carb work will help throttle response but unless you know what you are doing best to leave that to a qualified carb person. Try playing with timing or can you do that. Run 87 octane fuel. The less octane the quicker the burn. Being stock no need for anything more. _________________ George Herrin BP#6
